System Modelling

Models are abstractions of some part of the reality of a system. They are developed to assist analysis and design, to aid communication and understanding and as an improvement over linear sets of textual statements. In the context of Systems Engineering, we construct system models. Such models are abstractions of the final system that are developed from a particular perspective (such as a user or implementor) and at a particular level of detail.

There are typically three contexts for models.

Analysis models - to study what the system must do

Architecture models - to describe how the system will be constructed

Design models - to define how the system will be built

Cradle supports multi-level hierarchical models allowing you to arrange your project and create trial solution or production variants.

To open a diagram you may navigate directly to it from the model domain and its hierarchy. You can also open the diagram via its textual specification.

Open Child Diagram

Symbols on Cradle diagrams are active and directly linked to their specifications and child diagrams. Illustrated below is the lower-level of the highlighted symbol being expanded to its child diagram which is shown in the right-hand pane.

Open Specification

Specifications are definitions of non-data symbols in diagrams. They are subdivided by the type of symbol in which they appear in diagrams into different symbol categories. A specification would generally hold plain text description, pre and post conditions and may hold structured English or pseudo code. In the Implementation Domain performance data can also be specified to be used with the Cradle Performance Modelling module.
