Cradle offers an approach to automated report writing and document generation, capturing data from the Cradle Systems Engineering technical database without the design and layout of cumbersome publication templates, graphical editors or the writing of complex scripting languages. This approach is called the Document Publisher.
The Cradle Document Publisher allows you to use Microsoft Word® to construct arbitrarily large and complex documents from datasets in a Cradle Project Database (PDB). Word documents or reports are user-defined through Word documents constructed with tags or bookmarks that are keyed to access database information and define the layout/format of the information in the output document. These documents are regular doc files but are referred to as templates.
Documents can contain embedded text, tables and diagrams. Cross referenced information at any level of complexity can be accessed and reported in the output document. Filtering of data is provided to access information relative to specific conditions when publishing and to control the level or type of data published.
There is a simple, intuitive user interface to facilitate definition of the Word bookmark/tags and associated tag definitions, and to publish the corresponding reports.
The Document Publisher uses the Cradle Applications Programming Interface (API) to access the Cradle PDB and to retrieve the data to correctly populate the template tags in the user-defined format and to produce the desired document.
The result is a professional quality specification, technical report, or summary matrix that presents the data in the desired format. Project data can be filtered by the user to support configuration control and versioning, or to simply select portions (or levels) of data, for example to select only first level requirements for detailed analysis.
The advantage of the Document Publisher approach is that any authorised user on the project can access program information through the Word interface, presenting the information in such a way that best suits the needs of the project. The learning curve associated with this capability is greatly reduced compared to documentation efforts required by most automated CASE tools.
The information content of the documents generated by Document Publisher is controlled by tags that you insert into the document template. The contents of these tags are instructions that Document Publisher uses to extract items from the PDB and then to select the attributes of these items that are to be printed, and to control how they are to be printed (such as paragraph styles and numbering to be used).
By using the facilities built-in to Word, the documents produced by the Document Publisher can include Tables of Contents, Lists of Tables, Figures, Tasks and any other structuring elements that you require.
All aspects of the output documents are specified through the point-and-click UI provided by Document Publisher. There is no need to learn any form of complex scripting languages.
Document Publisher is part of the Cradle Office Toolsuite. There are different versions of this tool suite for each of the versions of Microsoft Office supported by Cradle, which are:
