How to Create a New Project

When you start with Cradle, you will need to create a new project in which to work. New projects are created using the Project Manager tool.

Select Start → Programs → Cradle → Project Manager to start Project Manager. It may take a few seconds to start fully because it will search your network to find all of the Cradle systems that exist. In most cases, you will only have one Cradle system, but some organisations have several:

The Cradle systems are shown on the left of the UI. In this case there are four Cradle systems each labelled with the TCP/IP hostname of the computer where its Cradle Database Server (CDS) is running. Three systems are not accessible (their icons have red marks). There is one Cradle system that we can use, labelled localhost.

You will probably see one Cradle system, labelled either with the name of the server on which the CDS is running or localhost if you are running Project Manager on the computer that runs the CDS.

Select the Cradle system and select Create Project… from the Project pull-down menu:

to show the Create Project dialog:

Enter the title of your project into the Title: field.

Enter a project code for the project into the Project code: field. If you are evaluating, this could be eval or play or test, for example. The code must be unique for all projects in your Cradle system. It must be 4 characters. Cradle will convert it to uppercase.

You can ignore the Project ID: field. The project ID is an optional part of the unique identifiers for all information in a Cradle database called project database unique IDs ( PDUIDs). It is only useful in the context of specialist import and export scenarios.

Choose a schema for the project from the Schema: drop-down list. There are two choices:

  • empty, a schema that has no configuration
  • default, a schema that has the same configuration as the DEMO database

This list of schemas is taken from the contents of the directory:

admin/defaults

in the Cradle installation on the server running the CDS. You can add your own schemas to this directory so they can be defaults for future projects. Once an organisation has decided how to apply Cradle to its process(es), the resulting Cradle schema(s) are added to this list so that they can be accessed when new projects are created.

In the Pathname: field, specify the location of the new project’s database, either by entering a pathname or by selecting the:

button to browse for a directory. If you browse, the actual location of the project’s database will be a new directory named from the project code inside the directory that you have chosen. Cradle databases can be anywhere on your network, but they will run substantially faster if stored on the same computer that runs the CDS.

When you have specified all of the details for the new project:

select OK. The new database will be created and a summary shown in a web browser window:

This window confirms the details of the new project’s Cradle database and confirms that the database is empty, except for a single user login account (called a user profile in Cradle) with the username MANAGER whose password is also: MANAGER.

Every Cradle project has its own collection of login accounts called the user register. Every project’s user register contains a MANAGER user. MANAGER is the equivalent of root on UNIX/Linux systems and Administrator on Windows. The MANAGER user is the most powerful user in the project since this account has maximum security clearance and all privileges.

Since the password the MANAGER user is well known, it is important that you change it as soon as possible.

To login to your new project, either select Start → Programs → Cradle → WorkBench to start WorkBench directly, or select your Cradle system in Project Manager, open the All Projects node in the project hierarchy, select your new project, right click and choose Open → WorkBench:

and log-in with the username MANAGER, password MANAGER:

Once WorkBench has started, you can change the password of the MANAGER account by selecting User Setup from the Admin pull-down menu to start the User Setup tool:

Enter the new password into the Password: and Check password: fields and select OK. Passwords are case-sensitive.

Most of the fields in the User Setup tool are disabled when the MANAGER user profile is shown, because this user profile cannot be changed (except for its password) and cannot be deleted.
