Scope

The scope of a system in the requirements gathering stage should be strictly controlled. The problem of Feature Creep is ever present and easily creates excessive spend on resource.

Each requirement needs to be audited to guarantee that the scope can be adequately assessed, and that a 'paper trail' can be followed to keep control of the overall scale of the system.

Scaling

The Scaling involved in systems engineering refers to the size of a system in relation to the functions required.

A single database my hold x amount of records used by n users. Scaling allows this to be efficiently increased exponentially. So as the user base increases the database should be designed to allow the capacity and scope to increase accordingly. This may be achieved through adding more tables to the database or adding more database servers or adding hard drives in an Array.
