Cradle XML and RIF

A major enhancement in Cradle-6.2 is the introduction of XML support into Cradle.

We have developed version 1.0 of Cradle XML, which is supported for export and import of all information types to and from Cradle databases. Cradle XML is fully described by a XML Schema Definition (XSD) file, which is held at:

Cradle XML is fully documented in the 3SL website. Once you have logged-in to our website, select the Cradle XML Documentation links in the Support and Reference areas of the site:

If you select the Cradle XML Presentation link, you can access a presentation that provides an overview of both Cradle XML and the XML processing capabilities of Cradle.

If you select the Cradle XML online documentation link, you will enter a section of our website that contains a full description of all aspects of Cradle XML. This area of our website provides a range of facilities that you can use to navigate within the definition of the elements of Cradle XML:

But the Cradle XML capability is capable of far more than simply importing and exporting Cradle XML. 3SL is unique amongst tool vendors by recognising that there are other applications in use by our customers and potential customers, and these other applications are also capable of exporting and importing XML files.

The issue is that these other applications’ XML files do not have the same structure as Cradle XML. Therefore, 3SL provides an XSLT-based mechanism to:

  • Transform other applications’ XML into Cradle XML so that it can be imported into Cradle
  • Transform Cradle XML into other applications’ XML so that Cradle data can be imported into other applications

This mechanism is user-definable, so you can extend Cradle’s XML import/export capabilities yourself!

We have used this mechanism in the Cradle-6.2 release to support Requirements Interchange Format (RIF) version 1.1a.
