Mixed Office Installations

3SL has recently encountered customers and potential customers who have installed pieces of different versions of Microsoft Office. For example, they have installed Office 2003 and then added Access 2007. Such mixed installations can cause problems for Cradle.

Several Cradle applications are dependent on particular versions of Microsoft Office. In particular, all of the tools in the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office have been built specifically for either Office XP, Office 2003 or Office 2007. This means that these Cradle tools have been built with specific libraries that only exist in the corresponding version of Office. The result is that Cradle tools built for one of these versions of Microsoft Office will not run with any other version of Office, since these versions of Office are mutually incompatible.

The resulting guidelines are:

  1. You cannot install or uninstall the Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office if you have parts of more than one version of Office (such as Office 2003 and 2007) installed at the same time
  2. If you have a version of Microsoft Office (such as Office 2003) and the corresponding Cradle Toolsuite for Microsoft Office (such as the Cradle Toolsuite for Office 2003) installed, then you can add parts of a different version of Office (such as Office 2007), except Word and Excel, and Cradle Toolsuite will continue to work. But you MUST uninstall these parts of the other version of Office before you try to uninstall Cradle Toolsuite, for example as part of removing or upgrading Cradle

We appreciate that this is complex and confusing!

If in doubt:

  • Please do not try to combine parts of different versions of Office
  • Ask 3SL!
