From an implementation or verification point of view this makes work increasingly difficult.\u00a0 It is necessary to split items like this into smaller parts. Making them into hierarchical items ensures clear and concise elements. However, it would be laborious to cut and paste the individual elements into new items and create the links back to the parent.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Split<\/strong> utility is an operation available for <em>requirements<\/em>, <em>system notes<\/em> and <em>specifications.<\/em> It splits an item&#8217;s text frame into several parts and creates a new item in the database for each of these parts according to a user-selected regular expression as one of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Newline<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>1) \/ 2} \/ 3.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>1.2 \/ 2-3<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>a) \/ b}<\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>i) \/ iv} \/ ix.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1717\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1717\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1717\" src=\"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Item_Split-300x291.png\" alt=\"Screenshot showing the item split dialog\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Item_Split-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Item_Split.png 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1717\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Item split dialog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each of the new split items is a copy of the original item and they are cross referenced back to the original item with a specific link type. The frame content of the original item is unaffected by the split.
