{"id":818,"date":"2016-05-07T11:04:59","date_gmt":"2016-05-07T10:04:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/?p=818"},"modified":"2018-09-17T09:55:39","modified_gmt":"2018-09-17T08:55:39","slug":"describe-schema-help-users","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/describe-schema-help-users\/","title":{"rendered":"Describe Your Schema to Help Your Users"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Schema<\/h2>\n<p>The structure of each <em>Cradle database<\/em> is defined by it&#8217;s <em>schema.<\/em> This contains many parts, but the most fundamental are the \u2018<em>item types<\/em>\u2018 for the types of information that <em>Cradle<\/em> will manage and the category and frame attributes of these item types.<\/p>\n<h3>Item Types, Categories and Frames<\/h3>\n<p>When you define the schema, you can specify a \u2018<em>description<\/em>\u2018 for all of these parts, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Item types<\/li>\n<li>Category codes<\/li>\n<li>Each value in a category code that is a pick-list of value(s)<\/li>\n<li>All frames<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3457\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3457 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/setting_schema_desctiptions-1.png\" alt=\"Setting schema descriptions in Cradle for categories and their values\" width=\"845\" height=\"641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/setting_schema_desctiptions-1.png 845w, https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/setting_schema_desctiptions-1-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/www.threesl.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/setting_schema_desctiptions-1-768x583.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Schema Descriptions<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Setting Schema Descriptions<\/h3>\n<p>These descriptions are very useful to end users, because <em>Cradle<\/em> will display them as <em>tooltips<\/em> in the UI (User Interface). This is a useful aide-m\u00e9moire to those editing the rules. However, if a certain action is prohibited by the rules, then the user is shown why.<\/p>\n<p>In this example two rules have been set up, one to allow user Alan to modify sub-part to component links and another to prevent all users modifying the same link. Because of the top-down sequence of rule matching this has the effect of allowing only Alan to modify cross references of this type. The example shows Dewi trying to modify the link attributes between the Pump parent component and the Pump housing linked as a sub-component. The warning shows why this alteration was prevented. Some item types may share the same <em>categories<\/em>, others may use unique values.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Group<\/em> field is available across the whole project. When the <em>schema<\/em> contains a number of entries for the <em>Group<\/em> field, these can be applied to any item type. If the project defines values for the <em>Group<\/em>, selection is only from the defined list. Some item types may only fall into one <em>group<\/em>, in this example a physical <em>bedroom<\/em> is going to be a <em>capital asset<\/em>, the <em>guest supplies<\/em> are<em> liquid assets<\/em>.
