Systems Engineering Glossary
Contains a list of the terminology used in requirements management, systems engineering and V&V (validation and verification), including terms used in model-based systems engineering (MBSE). The definitions of some of these terms are often the subject of debate. These are our definitions. If you disagree with any of them, please contact us to discuss! This list is not exhaustive.

Hierarchy
|
This can be visualised as an upside-down tree (or perhaps a pyramid), the top of which is known as the root. This term can apply to several areas in Cradle such as item hierarchy, team hierarchy, phase hierarchy, etc.

Hierarchy Diagram
|
A diagram style used to graphically show the cross references between items. A Hierarchy Diagram (HID) is a tree, that starts with the item of interest, and shows the items that are linked to it by cross references. Each of these items’ cross references can be shown, with their cross referenced items. This process can continue to any desired depth.

High Level Design
|
The activity which takes as its input the combination of the required functionality of the system that results from the system analysis activity, the requirements that could not be addressed during system analysis, and any constraints regarding system topology, or the inclusion of pre-defined equipments. The high-level design activity derives a system topology that meets the required performance, reliability, and availability criteria, and an apportionment of the system functionality into this topology.
