Happy Towel Day 2017

Don’t panic

Wherever you are in the universe, as Douglas Adams wrote, “Don’t Panic”. We all like a bit of comfort and security, and if that means taking a towel with you that’s fine.

Towel Day 2017

However, if you would like the comfort and security knowing you requirements and designs are fully covered, and traceable, may we suggest Cradle might be better?

the answer to life the universe and everything?
The Answer is …..

Celebrate World Telecommunications Day 2017

The aim of World Telecommunications Day is to highlight the importance of communication and how information travels across the world.

The day is closely  connected with the International Telegraph Union (ITU), the committee formed in 1865 to handle the emerging technologies.

We’re celebrating Dual-Tone Multi-Frequency signalling (DTMF). This is in-band signal alongside the normal voice data, between equipment and other devices and usually at the exchange. DTMF was first developed in the Bell System.

Data Structure Diagram (DSD)

DSDs are a graphical alternative to the composition specifications in data definitions. In our model of the DTMF, the signal is shown comprising of the Low Tone and the High Tone. These are  made up of the individual optional low and high tone components.

If you want a teaser for World Telecommunications Day 2017, why is the 1633Hz frequency not shown?

Star Wars Day 2017

Set the Context for Universal Domination in a DFD

Happy Star Wars day 2017

Whatever your Systems Engineering tasks you can use diagrams to illustrate the various components. In classic functional modelling the Essential domain shows the operational, theoretical, side of the design, and the Implementation domain models the actual real world components.

Data Flow Diagram DFD showing Cradle Globes as Death Star
Death Star DFD

The Context Diagram shows the entire system or subsystem as one process with the exchanges of information between it and its environment.  In today’s example, this is the ‘Death Star‘ , the external environment being the universe!

From the context diagram a set of hierarchical Data Flow Diagrams (DFDs) give a view of units of functionality and the exchanges of data between these units. So we would expect DFDs covering the Emperor’s Tower, Surface City, Superlaser Focus Lens and so on. So May the Fourth Be With you, and all your modelling.

Happy Saint George’s Day 2017

Happy St George’s Day

Wishing all our customers, suppliers and followers a Happy Saint George’s Day 2017 from 3SL.

UML Activity Diagram

In a UML model, the static representation of the system is a set of Class Diagrams (CD). Each class may have an associated Activity Diagram (ACD) to show the internal behaviour and/or algorithm for the class.

ACDs can also be drawn at any level in the UML model, to represent time sequenced behaviour at any level. The activities in the ACDs are intrinsically shareable, such that any given activity can appear on more than one ACD.

Depicting the legend of St George in an ACD
St. George as a UML Activity Diagram (ACD)

OK, we accept there may be a bit of poetic licence going on in this diagram, but it still shows how activity within a class can be represented. If you ever want a reminder of the legend of St. George it may be handy. For more information see the Cradle help section for ACD

National Tea Day – 21st April 2017

Support a Charity While You Have a Cuppa.

There are a number of ways you can get involved with National Tea Day www.nationalteaday.co.uk/ least of all you can ensure you get a good brew on for elevenses. Maybe nip out at lunch time and get a packet of scones and share afternoon tea with your work colleagues. Ask for donations in a Tea Cup and pick a local charity!

There’s an awful lot of Tea drunk by engineers at 3SL towers…….

Large amounts of tea drunk at 3SL
3SL – Tea

Now the tricky bit, how on earth do we make this blog entry have something to do with Cradle? Ah! Multivalue Picklist Categories is how. If you have a set of premises that you manage, these can be set as items within Cradle. Each café could have a number of supplies that the café offers, and these could be recorded in a multiple value category.

If there was a shortage of Oolong, it would be simple to run a query to list each of the premises that need to be contacted. For further reading on categories, you could read ‘Multiple Value Categories’

Showing that multivalue categories can be used for everything, including tea

UK Coffee Week 10-16 April 2017

Supporting Others by Drinking Coffee

The UKCoffeeWeek website supports Project Waterfall which aims to bring clean water to coffee growing communities. Much of the coffee consumed round the world originates from some of the poorest communities. By drinking your coffee during UK Coffee week at one of the participating coffee shops you’ll be putting something back into the communities that helped create your drink.

Do Your Engineers Run on Tea of Coffee?

3SL, producers of the Cradle engineering tool, is based in the UK, traditionally a tea loving nation. However, there has been a marked shift to coffee drinking in all variants. Here at 3SL towers, we have a mix of Tea and Coffee drinkers. Both sides are adamant that their drink is the best….. Take a minute to answer our snap Twitter poll.

New MBSE Reference in Improved 3SL Website

We recently released an update to our website in which all pages have a new navigation bar that contains shortcut icons to move directly to the most popular areas in the site. We also improved the speed with which the website loads, so the main page should now load in one third the time that it used to take.

Most significantly, we have added a ‘Reference’ section that wil contain a range of background systems engineering information, not necessarily related to Cradle. We have begun the reference section with a large volume of basic MBSE (model based systems engineering) information, see here:

https://www.threesl.com/pages/reference

in which you will find detailed descriptions of all of the diagram types for the three groups of modelling notations supported by Cradle:

– SysML
– Functional, Architecture, Data, which includes ADARTS, eFFBD, IDEF, SASD (DFD, STD, ERD and so on), architecture (PAD and AID), and many others
– UML

Please tell us what you think of the information in this section, and also try our website from your smartphone! We value your feedback!
